Mama Uţa $
( 0258-778 008; Gârda de Sus 97; campsite/cabin 15/100 lei; ) This popular sum-
mer spot, situated just on the western side of Gârda de Sus, has 14 wooden cabins. You
can also pitch a tent, but it gets crowded in summer. The restaurant is one of the best
around, so come for a meal even if you're not staying here.

Cabana Cetatile Ponorului $

mountain hut offers 65 beds in dorm rooms of two, four and six beds. The more expensive
beds have their own baths. Breakfast costs 12 lei. The hut is about three to four hours on
foot from Vârtop along a red-marked trail, but is also accessible from many trails in the
Padiş region.

A branch of the Apuseni Nature Reserve Visitors Centre ( main office 0259-329 339;
www.parcapuseni.ro ; 8am-4.30 Mon-Thu, 8am-2.30pm Fri) is located on Hwy 75
between Arieşeni and Gârda de Sus, about 1km west of Gârda de Sus. The office lacks
English-language materials, but the helpful staff can advise on caving, camping and hik-
ing opportunities. There's a handy ATM (Arieşeni 19) and post office (Arieşeni 19;
8am-4pm) in Arieşeni village.
Getting There & Away
Arieşeni and Gârda de Sus straddle Romanian Hwy 75, and there are decent bus and max-
itaxi connections to Ştei, Beiuş, Oradea and Arad. The main bus station is located at the
centre of Arieşeni village.
