fighters. The Austrians eventually prevailed, but ultimately ceded the territories to Hun-
gary when Austria and Hungary agreed to form a dual monarchy in 1867 (the ' Ausgleich
' as it was called).
Crişana and Banat largely thrived in the half century between the Ausgleich and WWI.
The amazing art nouveau and Secession architecture of the major cities is evidence of this
prosperity. Following WWI, Hungary lost large chunks of its former territory, including
what are now the Romanian regions of Crişana and Banat, which were awarded to newly
independent Romania.
