Information
Check www.padis.ro for details on the plateau. One regional map is Dimap's Zona Padiş
din Muntii Bihor , which can provide more detail.
It's worth considering going with a guide. Based in Oradea, Apuseni Experience (
0756-194 321, 0259-472 434; www.apuseniexperience.ro ) leads full weeklong hiking,
cultural, caving and underground rafting trips. Other good guides work with Green
Mountain Holidays ( 0744-637 227; www.greenmountainholidays.ro ) or Pan Travel (

Getting to the Plateau
The best access road to Padiş is south of Huedin from Rachiţele. It's 21km from Rachiţele
to Ponor and a further 10km to Padiş. Currently the road around Ponor is in bad shape and
you should ensure you bring a spare tyre. Another option is slower going: from Pietroasa
in the west (it's 16km to Boga then 6km to Padiş).
With the road under construction at the time of research, journey time should be
scythed by the time you read this - it may soon take as little as a few hours to Padiş Plat-
eau from Cluj.
By bus head from Cluj-Napoca to Huedin and hitch or catch a minibus to Rachiţele.
From here it's another hike or hitch.
These roads can be hiked, as can trails from Gârda de Sus (five to six hours, blue
stripes) or the lesser-used trail from Stâna de Vale in the northwest (six to seven hours, red
stripes).
Cluj-Napoca to Bistriţa
Don't think this road, passing many industrial towns and with trucks racing past you, is
going to be a lovely leisurely experience. Still, there are a few places worth stopping at if
you're headed north towards Bistriţa, Maramureş or Southern Bucovina.
BONŢIDA
Thirty kilometres northeast of Cluj and 3km east of the highway, this village's crowning
jewel is Banffy Castle ( www.heritagetraining-banffycastle.org ; admission 3 lei;
