In-Depth Information
TURDA GORGE
Turda Gorge (Cheile Turzii) is a short but stunning break in the mountains 7km or 8km west (as the stork flies). You
can hike the bottom of the gorge's length in an hour. To get there, take a bus to the centre of Cheia; they leave
hourly from the taxi stand in front of the church in Turda (3.50 lei). From there it's an easy 5km hike to the gorge
(follow the ' cheile turzii' signs). If you have wheels, you can drive down this road to the gorge, though this is not
recommended in bad weather unless you have a powerful 4WD. Our Daewoo Matiz, at prudently low speed, did
just fine when the road was dry.
Camping is possible in the area. There's a small bar at the cabana with drinks, but little to no food, so bring the
essentials.
Sleeping & Eating
Hunter Prince Castle $$
(Dracula Hotel; 0264-316 850; www.huntercastle.ro ; Str Sulutiu 4-6; s/d 204/247 lei;
) This imposingly turreted, whitewashed castle of a hotel is enticing, with a court-
yard dripping with plants and a cosy restaurant. Inside it gets amusingly Gothic, with tra-
ditional furniture, antlers, rugs and random wood statues. Highly camp, and if you have
kids with you they'll love it.
HOTEL
Alegria Pizzeria $
(Piaţa Republicii; mains 15 lei; 8am-midnight) This is a good stop for a coffee, pizza
or salad; eat inside its Europop-blasted interior or, even better still, outside on the Piaţa on
its terrace.
