History
Cluj-Napoca attained municipal status in AD 124, during the reign of Emperor Hadrian;
later, Emperor Marcus Aurelius elevated it to a colony between AD 161 and 180. From
1791 to 1848 and after the union with Hungary in 1867, Cluj-Napoca served as the capital
of Transylvania.

PIAŢA UNIRII
St Michael's Church
Offline map Google map
The vast 14th-century St Michael's Church dominates Piaţa Unirii. The neo-Gothic tower
(1859) topping the Gothic hall church creates a great landmark, and the church is con-
sidered to be one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in Romania. Daily services
are in Hungarian and Romanian, and evening organ concerts are often held.
