Stuffed Cabbage Leaves & Polenta
17 Romania's de facto, delicious national dish of stuffed cabbage (or sometimes grape)
leaves, sarmale cu mămăligă , is traditionally served at weddings, Christmas dinners and
big celebrations. It's also a staple on restaurant menus around the country. The leaves are
typically filled with spiced pork, but occasionally veal or lamb is mixed in. Mămăligă , a
thick porridge made from yellow corn (maize) flour, is a welcome sidekick to soak up the
savoury juices. Our favourite bit is the dollop of sour cream usually dropped on top. Pofta
buna!
