Gheorgheni
POP 19,705
Surrounded by stunning scenery on one of Romania's prettiest drives (the 13A and 13B,
via Sovata), with the mountains surging over golden plains dotted with flocks of sheep,
Gheorgheni is at best an overnight stop. Most of its limited life, including guesthouses,
banks and restaurants, gravitates around the triangular park of Piaţa Libertăţii.
Sights
The Tarisznyás Márton County Museum (Városi Tarisznyás Márton Muzeum;
0266-365 229; Str Rácóczi 1; adult/student 6/3 lei; 9am-5pm Tue-Sun) , 400m east of
Piaţa Libertăţii, is in an 18th-century Armenian trade house and it's well worth a visit to
see the intricately carved wooden fence posts, craftworkers' tools, and other artefacts of
Magyar and Székely culture. It backs onto an Armenian Church , which dates from the
17th century, when many Armenians lived in town.
