In-Depth Information
Several international buses leave from the lot next to Hotel Parc, 2km southwest of the
centre.
Train
Sibiu lies at an awkward rail junction; often you'll need to change trains. There are seven
daily direct trains to Braşov (35.60 lei, 2½ hours), three daily trains to Bucharest (67 lei,
five hours) and Timişoara (67 lei, five hours), and one early-morning run to Arad (55 lei,
five hours). To get to/from Sighişoara (13 lei) or Cluj-Napoca (55 lei), you'll have to
change at Copşa Mică or Mediaş (about nine or 10 trains daily). For Alba Iulia (25 lei, 2½
hours), there are two direct, otherwise change at Vinţu de Jos.
For villages Rasinari and Paltinis it's necessary to catch a local bus from the train sta-
tion (9 lei).
The Agenţia de Voiaj CFR office ( 0269-212 085; Str Nicolae Bălcescu 6;
7am-8pm Mon-Fri) sells advance tickets and serves as agents for Blue Air and Eurolines.
Getting Around
Trolleybus 1 connects the train station with the centre, but it's only a 450m walk along Str
General Magheru. Trolleybus 8 runs between the airport and the train station.
There's a taxi stand at the west end of Str Nicolae Bălcescu. To call a taxi dial
0269-953.
Car Rental
Autonom ( 0269-235 538; www.autonom.com ; Str Nicolae Bălcescu 1; 9am-6pm
Mon-Fri) Typically has the best rates, from €35 per day for a Fiat Panda, but if you're hir-
ing for a week or more they're amenable to negotiating a heavy discount. Also has an of-
fice at Sibiu Airport.
Around Sibiu
Many visitors fail to capitalise on Sibiu's great nearby attractions - quiet villages and hik-
ing trails past glacial lakes. It's possible to hike across the Cindrel Mountains on a day
trip, or rent a bike and go on trails from Păltiniş.
About 16km north of Sibiu towards the heart of Saxon Land, in the town of Slimnic , is
a great hilltop 15th-century fortified church that's fun to ramble around.
