In-Depth Information
FĂGĂRAŞ
Făgăraş (fuh-guh- rash ) town is 25km east of the start of the Transfăgărăşan Road, but has
more services than any access point north of the mountain range. Dead-centre Piaţa Re-
publicii, where you'll find a bank, is one block northwest of the maxitaxi stop on B-dul
Unirii. The train station and bus station are 1km north of the maxitaxi stop. The only at-
traction in Făgăraş is a real-live, moat-surrounded castle, a block north of the roundabout,
which houses the Valeriu Literat Făgăraş Museum ( 0268-211 862; adult/student 5/2
lei; 8am-6pm Tue-Fri, to 4pm Sat & Sun) . The collection spans the town's history, and
the highlight is the 20th- century sculpture of local artist Virgil Fulicea. The castle was
originally built in the 13th century, but what you see dates from the mid-17th century.
