engineering, it won first prize at the Paris World Expo in 1900. Inside the grounds are
many buildings of interest, including a small bastion, which is famous in local lore:
couples wanting a divorce were supposedly locked in here for two weeks as a last attempt
to resolve differences. There was only one bed and one set of cutlery. The method has
been so successful that only one couple decided to go through with divorce in 400 years!
If you're lucky enough to time your visit in mid-August you'll be here for the Lună
Plină (Full Moon) Horror Film Festival ( www.lunaplinaferstival.ro ) . Biertan also hosts
a Saxon Festival in mid-September.

Breakfast includes homemade cheese and jam. Secluded and restful, it's set within the cit-
adel walls.

two well-kitted-out apartments based around a small courtyard. Huge bathrooms, refined
decor, fresh linen, plus wi-fi and cable TV. Ask the manager about cycle hire, archery and
riding activities.

tic - the backyard gives onto a tumbledown shepherd hut - with the modern - a fresh in-
