Getting There & Away
About a dozen trains connect Sighişoara with Braşov (21 lei, two hours), nine of which
(none of the slow ones) go on to Bucharest (65 lei, 4½ hours). Five daily trains go to Cluj-
Napoca (59 lei, 3½ hours).
You'll need to change trains in Mediaş to reach Sibiu (16 lei, 2½ hours), but the four
daily trains are timed for easy transfers. Three daily trains go to Budapest (145 lei, nine
hours), and the night train has a sleeper (from 200 lei).
Buy tickets at the train station ( 0265-771 886).
Next to the train station on Str Libertăţii, the bus station ( 0265-771 260) sends
buses of various sizes and colours to Bistriţa (33 lei, three hours, three daily), Făgăraş (19
lei, three hours, one daily) and Sibiu (20 lei, 2½ hours, four daily). Maxitaxis pass by
every couple of hours for Târgu Mureş (12 lei, 1½ hours). There are regular services to
Daneş (3 lei). Buses to Sibiu stop at Mediaş. Buses to Braşov (38 lei, 2½ hours) stop at
the bus station a couple of times per day and require a reservation ( 0265-250 702).
Getting Around
Taxis greet incoming trains; it should be about 10 lei to reach the citadel. If driving into
the citadel with a private car, there's a 15 lei access charge.
Gia Hostel ( Click here ) hires cars from about 90 lei per day. Mokai Rent a Car (
0744-605 816, 0265-777 113; www.rentacarsighisoara.com ) charges about 90 lei per day
for a Fiat Panda.
Fortified Saxon Churches
One of Romania's highlights is here in the belly of Saxon Land (aka the Târnave plateau),
stretching more or less 120km between Hwy 1 (between Braşov and Sibiu) to the south,
and Hwy 13 (Braşov to Sighişoara) and Hwy 14 (Sighişoara to Sibiu) to the north. The
