you don't have to - instead push on up those forested hills to the pretty village of Măgura
in the heart of Piatra Craiului. Buses stop at a roundabout, near the post office and about
100m past the city hall and centre along Str Metropolit Ion Meţianu. The train station is
about 1km east of (before) the city hall.

Park (making it perfect for an early morning hike), the 17 rooms, all with shared bath-
rooms, in this large creaky edifice are boxy but adequate. Breakfast is an extra 10 lei.

24-hour ATM.
Piatra Craiului National Park Office ( 0268-223 165; www.pcrai.ro ; Str Topliţei
150; 8am-4pm Mon-Thu, to 2.30pm Fri) In a building shaped like a mountain range
about 2km towards the mountains, west from the centre - follow the 'Plaiu Foii' sign at
the bus-stop roundabout, then go left at the fork. It has excellent maps and guides avail-
able (from 82 lei per day).
Salvamont ( 0722-553 121; Str Metropolit Ion Meţianu 17; 8am-5pm) The closed
information centre (a pink building 50m east of the city hall) now houses this scraggly
local rescue team which can help point your way (in English).
Getting There & Away
There are 14 buses leaving weekdays to Autogara 2 in Braşov (6 lei, one hour), and about
half that at weekends. About five or six daily buses head to Bran (4 lei, 40 minutes). If
you're headed up to stay in Măgura village you'll need to organise a lift from up there or
thumb a ride.
