In-Depth Information
Toilets
With the exception of a few Middle Eastern-style squat toilets near the Turkish border, al-
most all toilets in Bulgaria are of the sit-down European variety. All hotels provide toilet
paper and soap, but these are rarely offered anywhere else.
Public toilets are usually found at bus and train stations, underpasses and parks, and
standards of cleanliness are generally poor. You will be charged between 0.30 lv and 0.50
lv per visit, sometimes more for toilet paper. Much better (and free) facilities are available
within modern shopping malls. Western fast-food franchises such as McDonald's always
have clean toilets with toilet paper.
Tourist Information
Bulgaria still doesn't have a dedicated Ministry of Tourism. Tourism is the responsibility
of the Ministry of Economy and Energy.
The bigger cities, and some smaller towns popular with tourists, now have dedicated
tourist information centres , which provide free maps, leaflets and brochures. National
parks often have small information centres offering advice.

Travellers with Disabilities
Unfortunately, Bulgaria is not an easy destination for disabled travellers. Uneven and
broken footpaths make wheelchair mobility problematic, and ramps and special toilets for
those in a wheelchair are few and far between, other than in a handful of top-end hotels in
Sofia and other big cities. Public transport is not geared towards the needs of travellers
with disabilities.
