Camping
Camping is not as popular as it once was in Bulgaria, and facilities at the campgrounds
that do exist are often very basic. Most are open only between May and September. They
are mainly popular with Bulgarian families, and are rarely convenient for anyone relying
on public transport.
Camping in the wild (ie outside a camping ground) is technically prohibited but nor-
mally accepted if you're discreet and, most importantly, do not build wood fires (which
attract attention and damage the environment).
Hostels
Backpacker hostels are increasingly popular in Bulgaria, and new establishments are ap-
pearing all the time.
Sofia has more hostels than anywhere else. You will also find hostels in Veliko
Târnovo, Varna, Plovdiv and Burgas. Most are clean, modern and friendly places in cent-
ral locations.
Hostelling International (HI; www.hihostels.com ) can book you into hostels in Sofia
and Plovdiv.
Hotels
Bulgaria has a wide variety of hotel accommodation at all prices. Usually, the most at-
tractive, and often best value, places are the smaller, family-run hotels.
Many of the older, formerly state-run hotels - concrete monstrosities from the 1960s
and 70s - have now been privatised and renovated. However, some are still shabby and
run down, with antiquated plumbing and old-fashioned attitudes to customer service.
Some hotels do not offer single rooms or single rates in a double room. If this is the
case, only the rates for doubles are listed in this review. Suites normally have a separate
lounge area and sometimes an extra bedroom.
