Boom Town: Mining & the Environment
If you fly into Perth, you'll notice one thing straight away. The fly-in, fly-out 'FIFO'
lifestyle is not only ubiquitous but now the norm. Large clutches of workers nonchal-
antly board their flights to remote mines and oil and gas plants every few hours. Some
will be wearing their fluorescent orange or yellow 'high-vis' vests, required attire on
site and perhaps an understated badge of honour at the airport.
The 'four weeks on, one week off' fly-in, fly-out schedule on the mines is referred to as the 'divorce roster'.
