This study is a follow-up on observations made
during a study funded by the French COPREP
Consortium (Elf Aquitaine, Institut Francais du
Petrole, Total and Gaz de France) in the Paradox
Basin area of Utah, as well as abundant fi eld work
done with Robert N. Ginsburg in various mod-
ern environments including south Florida, the
Bahamas and Belize. Fruitful discussions with a
number of colleagues, in particular Gregor Eberli,
Don McNeill, Gene Stevenson, Susan Longacre
and Brenda Kirkland-George during the develop-
ment of the ideas presented in this manuscript
are gratefully acknowledged, as are reviews of
the paper by Katherine Giles, George Stanley and
Peter Swart. In addition, Stella Bignold was very
helpful in the fi nal stages of manuscript submis-
sion. Lastly, we acknowledge the intellectual
support and stimulation of Bob Ginsburg (espe-
cially GMG) and his insight into the application
of comparative sedimentology.
