of the cores in this study were recovered, espe-
cially Bob Dill, Bill and Betsy Gladfelter, Gray
Multer and John Ogden. The manuscript also
benefi ted from the comments of an anonymous
reviewer, plus the review and thoughtful discus-
sions/correspondence over the past year with
Eberhard Gischler, with whom I am honoured to
both agree and disagree.
Finally, individuals like Bob Ginsburg who
asked the questions that have directed us for the
three decades since our fi rst holes were drilled
with those crude, portable units ultimately set the
stage for a new science that was to follow. The
session in which this contribution was presented
refl ects the high esteem in which we hold, not
only Bob, but all of those individuals who pro-
pose ideas that force us to abandon comfortable
dogmas.
