(b) That drivers for Triassic cycles also operate
in the Holocene and Pleistocene but do not
generate carbonate depositional cycles.

This manuscript represents the last body of work
done by the late Professor Robert K. Goldhammer
in the Dolomite Alps of northern Italy. Bob had
a great love of fi eldwork in the Alps due to the
excellent preservation of cyclic carbonate strati-
graphy at various localities there. Bob also had
deep respect for his scientifi c forebears. Bob
would commonly refer to publications and ideas
put forth by 'the Gins' when teaching to remind
students of the many ideas within the scientifi c
community regarding the origin of carbonate rock
fabrics and depositional cycles. What we present
here is a written attempt to steward Bob's lat-
est ideas to the geological and broader scientifi c
community.
The authors gratefully acknowledge Dr Nereo
Preto and Dr Olga Piros for identifi cation of
dasycladacean algae collected from the Mendola
cycles, and for translating important references
and ammonite records relating to the Mendola
stratigraphic framework. We also thank Dr Florian
Maurer, Dr David Osleger and Dr Thomas
Stevens for reviews of the manuscript and their
constructive commentary. R.M. Forkner was
