Map 12. Estradas and varadouros .
Da Cunha's map, presented in the fashionable journal Kosmos , in January 1906
shortly after his return, is reproduced here as map 12 . Each barracão (rubber post) im-
plies six or more estradas —tapping trails—and their extensive areas behind the river
port. This was the everyday form of occupation, stretching out, as da Cunha saw it, like
an octopus, incorporating the landscape away from the river in its economic tentacles.
