formation of a new meristemoid adjacent to the pre-existing ones.

Perspective
Trichome and stomata patterning represent two formally very similar examples of de
novo pattern formation in a two-dimensional field. Yet the underlying mechanisms
by which the cells communicate and determine the pattern are different. Whereas
cell-to-cell communication during trichome patterning is thought to be based on
the movement of transcription factors through plasmodesmata, stomatal patterning
appears to involve a receptor-ligand system. Whereas during trichome develop-
ment, cells are likely to be selected by a reaction-diffusion mechanism, stomatal
patterning is regulated by orienting the division plane properly during asymmetric
cell divisions. Many of the discussed aspects are still very speculative and are based
on better-studied animal models. It remains to be explored as to what extent these
analogies and models hold true.
