Planning
When to Go
Provence-Côte d'Azur is an easy destination year-round for families. The sea is off-limits
from October to May but the warm Riviera sun will give you plenty more to do. Snow
activities in Haute-Provence (easily accessible from Nice) are another winter favourite for
kids and teenagers. And there is plenty to keep the family entertained on rainy days, from
museums to cinemas.
Be mindful of the heat in summer.
BREASTFEEDING
For all their topless sunbathing, the French are surprisingly uneasy about breastfeeding in public; consider using a
shawl or a blanket.
Accommodation
Many hotels cater well to families. Babies and toddlers are generally accommodated for
with an extra (free) bed in the parents' room. For kids, options include quadruple or fam-
ily rooms, suites, or chambres communicantes (communicating rooms).
Chambres d'hôte are a great option; many offer dinner on the premises, which takes
care of babysitting arrangements: just bring a baby-monitor to wine and dine in at peace.
Hostels are often a great bet for families keen to watch the pennies, with excellent half-
board deals. Some upmarket establishments have kitchenettes; top-end hotels can also ar-
range baby-sitting services.
