Find maps at maisons de la presse (newsagencies), papeteries (stationery shops) , tourist
offices and bookshops. Quality maps cost about €7. The website http://fr.mappy.com has
online maps and a journey planner, including tolls and petrol costs.
Free street plans (maps) distributed by tourist offices range from superb to useless.
Marseille's tourist office has good free city maps, but note the compass rose: north is not
at the top of the page.

Cartographers Michelin ( http://boutiquecartesetguides.michelin.fr ) and Institut Géo-
graphique National (IGN; www.ign.fr ) have online boutiques.
Walking & Cycling Maps
Fédération Française de Randonnée Pédestre (FFRP; French Walking Federation;
www.ffrandonnee.fr ) publishes detailed French-language topo guides - trail booklets of
major routes (eg GRs) with topographic maps.
Several local walking organisations also produce detailed topographic trail guides; ask
tourist offices and bookshops.
IGN (IGN; www.ign.fr ) publishes brilliant topographical guides and outdoor-sports
maps. It also has good mobile apps, though paper is better for serious hiking.
Guides RandOxygène ( www.randoxygene.org ) is an excellent resource for hiking,
mountain-biking, snowshoeing and canyoning, with maps and text; in French.
