In-Depth Information
Costs
Rates in this topic are for high season. The region gets pricey, particularly along the Côte
d'Azur. Some innkeepers drop rates in spring and autumn; many offer discounts ( remises )
for stays beyond two days. Tax costs €0.20 to €1.50 daily. Breakfast is included at
chambres d'hôte ; otherwise, expect to pay €7 to €20. Always ask about parking; it's usu-
ally extra. Some inns accept cash only, but the nearest ATM may be far away: plan ac-
cordingly. For high-demand destinations such as Avignon, Aix and Monaco, consider
staying in less-expensive Orange, Marseille and Nice, then making day trips.
PRICE RANGES

Reservations
Don't just show up in July and August: bookings are essential. Local tourist offices can
help, but each is different. Some require bookings be same-day, others require you present
in person, others charge a fee. Tourism offices are the best points of contact when you're
stuck, but note that officials can't show favouritism to specific businesses: ask pointed
questions.
Seasons
Lodging prices vary (hugely) by season.
»low season: October/ November to February/March
»mid-season: March to May and September/October
»high season: June to September
