In-Depth Information
Les Mées
As you whiz past Les Mées on the autoroute, 22km south of Sisteron, you can't miss the
otherworldly Rochers des Mées, rows of 100m-high rocky pinnacles. Legend claims they
were once monks, turned to stone for lusting after Saracen women. A walk on the loop
trail over them takes 3½ hours.
Ganagobie & Around
Prieuré de Ganagobie ( 04 92 68 00 04; Ganagobie; 3-5pm Tue-Sun) , a still-work-
ing 10th-century Benedictine monastery 10km south of Les Mées, is isolated, 3km up a
winding one-lane road. Stroll among quiet hilltop woods and soak in the ethereal calm
surrounding the monastery. The chapel is the only enclosed section open to visitors; its
12th-century floor mosaic (depicting dragons) is the largest of its kind in France. The
monk-tended shop stocks soaps, honeys and music made by the monks and houses arte-
facts found on-site.
Mas Saint-Joseph ( 04 92 62 47 54; www.lemassaintjoseph.com ; Châteauneuf-Val-
St-Donat; s/d/tr/q €58/64/83/102; Apr-Oct; ) , a converted farmhouse in pastoral
country, sits alone atop a wooded hillside (with lots of stairs). Wood beams and stone
walls make the whitewashed rooms feel extra special. Hot tub and shared kitchen. The
table d'hôte (set menu at fixed price; €22) includes wine. It's 10km northwest of Peyruis.
