15km southeast to Volx to learn about olive oil production and the tree's significance in

tury Prieuré de Salagon (4km south of Forcalquier, outside the walled village Mane) is
among Provence's most peaceful spots. Wander through medieval herb gardens, fragrant
with native lavender, mints and mugworts, and a show garden of world plants. One stone
building houses concerts and exhibitions. The inviting bookshop features an extensive
children's section.

in perfume-making, wine-tasting, and aromatherapy - some for families - in Forcalquier's
13th-century convent.

farmhouse crowns a ridge in big-view countryside about 8km east of Forcalquier. Five
rooms and one studio, each with private entrance and some with beamed ceilings, are dec-
orated in smart country-house style. The gracious owners keep horses, which roam below
the vast flowered-festooned stone terrace. There's a huge pool and limited wi-fi. Reserve
ahead for the délicieux all-inclusive tables d'hôte (set fixed-price menus; €28).
