Getting There & Around
CAR Driving is easiest, but parking is hellish. Find metered spaces far down the hill at
the village's edge; there's free parking outside Carrières de Lumière ( Click here ) . Good
luck.
BUS Allô Cartreize ( Click here ) has services to St-Rémy-de-Provence (€2.20, 10
minutes) and Arles (€2.20, 30 minutes) at weekends from May to September and daily in
July and August.
Nîmes & Around
NÎMES
POP 144,092
Though not technically Provence, Nîmes' incredible Roman monuments merit a day trip
to Languedoc. It's also an important transportation hub for the Camargue. The old town is
filled with good shopping, cafes and bars. The Pont du Gard aqueduct, 23km northeast,
once supplied the Roman city with water. Now it adorns every postcard rack in the region.

Les Arènes
Offline map Google map
( www.arenes-nimes.com ; place des Arènes; adult/child €7.90/6; 9am-8pm Jul-Aug,
earlier closing at other times) Impressively intact, Nîmes' Roman amphitheatre was once
the setting for executions and gladiator fights. Built c AD100 for 24,000 spectators, the in-
terior has four seating tiers and a labyrinth of passages to keep patricians apart from plebs.
An excellent audioguide brings the dramatic history to life. Year-round, Les Arènes stages
plays, concerts and bullfights.
