Getting There & Away
From Avignon (18km, 30 minutes) take D907 north to D17. From Orange (10km, 15
minutes) take D68 south.
Transdev Sud-Est ( 04 32 76 00 40; www.sudest-mobilites.fr ) operates limited ser-
vice to/from Orange (€1.50, 30 minutes, two or three services Monday to Saturday) and
Avignon (€2, 60 minutes, one or two services Monday to Saturday), but same-day
roundtrips are impossible. Buses stop at intersection of av Louis Pasteur and rue de la
Nouvelle Poste.

If you see only one Roman site in France, make it Orange. Considering the exceptional
beauty of its Roman theatre and monumental archway - both Unesco World Heritage
Sites - the ultraconservative town is surprisingly untouristy, and is dead in winter. Accom-
modation is good value, but it's nearly impossible to find dinner on Sunday or Monday
nights.
