Tipping
» When to Tip Tipping is optional everywhere, although still customary in restaurants.
» Restaurants A 15% service charge is usually included in the bill; tip if you've really
appreciated the service.
» Taxis Most people round up to the nearest euro.
» Bars If you go to the bar to get drinks, there's no need to tip; if drinks are brought to
your table, tip as for restaurants.
» Hotels Rare, unless for concierge or valet car service in luxury hotels.
Money
Credit and debit cards can be used almost everywhere, though there may be a minimum purchase of €10. Visa and
MasterCard are the most popular options; American Express is only accepted by major chains, and few places
take Diners Club and JCB. Ask if bars and restaurants take cards before you order. Chip-and-pin is the norm for
card transactions - few places accept signatures as an alternative.
ATMs are everywhere; you could also make cash advances on your credit card. Beware of high transaction fees
when using your card.
