larly used for alfresco concerts and plays, the Théâtre Antique dates from the end of the
1st century BC. For hundreds of years it was a source of construction materials, with
workers chipping away at the 102m-diameter structure (the column on the right-hand side
near the entrance indicates the height of the original arcade).

Just as social, political and religious life revolved around the forum in Roman Arles (spot
the remains of a 2nd century AD temple embedded in Hôtel Pinus Nord's facade), so this
busy plane-tree-shaded square buzzes with cafe life today.
Beneath your feet are Cryptoportiques Offline map Google map (adult/child €3.50/free;
9am-noon & 2-7pm) , subterranean foundations for the forum and buried arcades (the
plaza was lower in Roman times) carved out in the 1st century BC. Access the under-
ground galleries, 89m long and 59m wide, at the Hôtel de Ville Offline map Google map

(rue du Grand Prieuré; adult/child €3/free; 9am-noon & 2-7pm) Partly preserved Ro-
man baths were built for Emperor Constantine's private use in the 4th century.

Les Alyscamps
(adult/child €3.50/free; 9am-7pm) Van Gogh and Gauguin both painted this necropolis
1km southwest of the centre. Founded by the Romans and adopted by Christians in the 4th
century, the cemetery became a coveted resting place because of the tombs of martyr St
Genest and Arles' first bishops.
