Les Vergers de Saint-Paul €€
( 04 93 32 94 24; www.vergersdesaintpaul.com ; 940 rte de la Colle, St-Paul de Vence;
d €155-170; ) This elegant hotel has something of a belle époque feel about it,
with the art deco stripy fabrics, parquet floors, resplendent white facade and wrought-iron
balconies. There is a splendid pool too, with assorted loungers. We prefer the rooms in the
main building to those in the annexe.
BOUTIQUE HOTEL
La Colombe d'Or €€€
( 04 93 32 80 02; www.la-colombe-dor.com ; place de Gaulle; r from €250-430;
closed Nov-Christmas; ) This world-famous inn could double as the Fondation Mae-
ght's annexe: La Colombe d'Or (located outside the walls, at the entrance of the village)
was the party HQ of many 20th-century artists (Chagall, Braque, Matisse, Picasso etc),
who often paid for their meals in kind, resulting in an incredible private art collection.
Every room houses unique art and vintage furniture, as do the dining room and garden.
Hotel guests get access to the lovely pool, which is heated year-round and crowned by a
Calder mobile.

Eating
La Colombe d'Or €€€
TRADITIONAL FRENCH
( 04 93 32 80 02; www.la-colombe-dor.com ; place de Gaulle;
mains €30-55; lunch & dinner mid-Dec-Oct; ) A Léger mosaic here, a Picas-
so painting there: these are just some of the original modern artworks at the Golden Dove,
the legendary restaurant where impoverished artists paid for meals with their creations.
Dining is beneath fig trees in summer or in the art-filled dining room in winter, and the
cuisine is surprisingly uncomplicated (terrines, rabbit stew, beef carpaccio). Book well
ahead. The restaurant is also a hotel ( Click here ) .
Le Tilleul €€
( 04 93 32 80 36; place du Tilleul; menu €25, mains €18-25; lunch & dinner;
) Under the shade of a big lime blossom (linden) tree, Le Tilleul is a gem. Considering its
location on the remparts , it could have easily plumbed the depths of a typical tourist trap;
instead, divine and beautifully presented dishes such as saffron mussel gratin with melting
leeks grace your table. A minimum of €30 is required for card payments.
