In-Depth Information
Peille may not be quite as spectacular as Peillon but it makes up in history what it lacks in
wow factor. The village's excellent Point Info Tourisme ( 04 93 82 14 40; 15 rue cent-
rale, Peille; 10am-noon & 1-6pm Wed-Sun) offers free, tailor-made guided tours de-
pending on how much time you have (available in English and Italian). Highlights include
the medieval centre, the village museum, the church and old photographs of the village.
Peille is also renowned for its via ferrata ( 04 93 91 71 71; www.viaferratapeille.fr ;
9am-6pm) , a mountain course equipped with ladders, fixed cables, rope bridges etc.
No previous experience required, although you must be sure-footed, reasonably fit and,
most importantly, not scared of heights. The entire course takes about four hours to com-
plete. Admission must be paid either at the Point Info Tourisme, or at Bar l'Absinthe
(Place du Serre, Peille) , where you can also rent all the equipment you'll need (€18 for
helmet, harness, ropes, carabiners etc). A guide costs €40 and must be booked the day be-
fore.
For sustenance, head to Le Relais Saint-Martin ( 04 93 41 16 03;
www.chezcotton.com ; Saint-Martin de Peille; mains €11-18; lunch & dinner Thu-Tue
Apr-Oct, lunch only Nov-Mar) , 6km south of Peille. This typical country inn serves hearty
Provençal fare, prepared by the incomparable Gérard. Depending on the seasons, you'll
feast on pit-roasted suckling pig, grilled fish, wild boar, polenta, barbajuan (fried ravioli
from Monaco) and home-made ravioli. In summer, meals are served on the panoramic ter-
race.
Bus 116 (€1) links Peille with La Turbie (20 minutes) and Nice (one hour) three times a
day.
