GETTING AROUND
Bymetro The St Petersburg metro, the deepest in the world, runs from 5.30am to midnight.
Small numbers of journeys (R28 a journey) are sold using tokens ( zhetoni ), which you feed
into ticket machines. For ten or more rides to be used over a fixed number of days, buy a
plastic card.
By bus and trolleybus Often the best way to navigate a major road like Nevsky prospekt,
overground transport is more useful in the compact city centre than the metro, with its
lengthy escalators. Buy tickets from the driver (R25).
By minibus Marshrutkas (yellow in St Petersburg) are cheap (R35 a journey) and cheerful.
The #K-147 goes from Moskovskiy vokzal train station right to the upper end of Nevsky
prospekt.
By boat One of the best ways to see the city is by boat (May-Oct) - either a private
motorboat from any bridge on Nevsky prospekt (from R2000/hr/boat), or a large tour
boat from behind the Hermitage (R300/person). AngloTourismo ( 921 989 4722, anglo-
tourismo.com ) offer guided tours in English (R600) from the pier on Fontanka next to
Shuvalovsky Palace at Nab. reki Fontanki 21 (Gostiny dvor). Try the excellent “St Peters-
burg by Night” boat tour (R750), which takes in the more spectacular of the city's bridges,
illuminated as they are being raised for the night.
