TREAT YOURSELF
Mari Vanna Spiridonevskiy per. 10a 495 650 65 00, marivanna.ru ; Tverskaya. Set out like a
1960s Soviet flat, with mock black-and-white TV, floral decor and old-world memorabilia, this expat
favourite is a great little place to savour traditional Russian dishes. The exquisite borshch soup (R450)
is presented at the table with a little fanfare, and the home-made meat pelmeni (R650) are just superb.
Make sure to try the cherry vareniki for dessert (dumplings; R270). Roaming pets add to the welcom-
ing homely atmosphere, as does the doorbell you need to ring upon arrival. Daily 9am-midnight.

Mayak Bol. Nikitskaya 19; Arbatskaya. With its heavy furnishings, parquet floors and an
old-school piano this popular restaurant located above a theatre is set out like an oversized
Soviet drawing room. The crowd, a mix of foreigners and bohemian Muscovites, ensures a
convivial vibe, and the beef stroganoff (R490) is reliably good. Daily noon-6am.
Projektor Slavyanskaya pl. 2/5; Kitay-gorod. This hip addition to Moscow's dining and
nightlife scene serves an array of beautifully presented international dishes at knockdown
prices. It does a fantastic cocktail too - sit back in one of the partitioned sofa areas and
choose from a 40-strong list, with the Apple Jack (R380) and Crusoe-inspired Robinson
(R450)particularly good.Resident DJsliven things upwith funkyjazz music onFriandSat

Sisters Grimm Stoleshnikov per. 11; Teatralnaya. Tucked away in a courtyard, this quiet
little place is a perfect spot for a bite before heading to its next-door neighbour Gogol until
the early hours. The international menu includes big juicy burgers (R325) as well as lighter
meals such as salads (R190) and soups (R240). Mon-Fri noon-midnight, Sat & Sun until
2am.
