In-Depth Information
Bars & Clubs
Dubliners like to throw down some dance-floor moves, but for the most part they do it in
bars equipped with a late license, a decent sound system and a space on the floor. It's all
changed from even a decade ago, when clubbing was all the rage: these days fewer people
pay to simply go dancing, preferring instead the option of dancing in a bar they've been in
most of the evening. DJs are an increasingly rare breed, but the ones that thrive usually
play it pretty safe; the handful of more creative DJs (including occasional international
guests) play in an increasingly restricted number of venues.
The busiest nights are Thursday to Saturday, and most clubs are free if you arrive be-
fore 11pm. After that, you'll pay between €5 to €10.
Cafes
Dublin's coffee junkies are everywhere, looking for that perfect barista fix that will kill
the hunger until the next one. You can top up at any of the chains - including that one
from Seattle - but we reckon your caffeine craving will get the best fix at individual loc-
ales such as Clement & Pekoe ( Click here ) , Brother Hubbard ( Click here ) , Wall & Keogh
LGBT Dublin
Una Mullally, a features writer for the Irish Times , helped us compile some tips and re-
commendations for LGBT visitors to Dublin.
Dublin is a pretty gay city and a magnet for LGBT people around the country. The best
thing about Dublin's gay scene is that it's very mixed across gender, age and nationality.
Unlike bigger cities, bars and clubs generally have a good mix of men and women, unless
you're heading to a specific event. Look beyond the mainstream venues and nights and
you'll find a more alternative and queer undercurrent.
The Front Lounge ( Click here ) is a beautiful, chilled-out bar and the perfect place to
start your night or wind down after work. Pantibar ( Click here ) , with its alternative drag
shows, make-and-do nights and basement pool room is always fun. Mother ( Click here ) is
a small Saturday-night club on Copper Alley that plays the best music in town if you're
looking for a sweaty and fun disco where Sister Sledge and LCD Soundsystem rule.
