GLENDALOUGH
If you're looking for the epitome of rugged and romantic Ireland, you won't do
much better than Glendalough, truly one of Ireland's most beautiful corners.
The substantial remains of this important monastic settlement are certainly impressive,
but the real draw is the splendid setting: two dark and mysterious lakes tucked into a deep
valley covered in forest. It is, despite its immense popularity, a deeply tranquil and spiritu-
al place. Visit early or late in the day - or out of season - to avoid the big crowds, and re-
member that a visit here is all about walking, so wear comfortable shoes.
At the valley entrance, before the Glendalough Hotel, is Glendalough Visitor Centre
( www.heritageireland.ie ; adult/child €3/1; 9.30am-6pm mid-Mar-mid-Oct, to 5pm mid-Oct-mid-Mar) . It has a
high-quality 17-minute audiovisual presentation called Ireland of the Monasteries .
