SHOPPING
Isn't there enough shopping for you around Grafton St? For a long time the Dock-
lands development crowd didn't think so and imagined a new shopping oasis by the
banks of the Liffey. Things didn't quite go as planned and the Docklands remains
largely bereft of the kind of retail distractions envisaged, with one notable exception.

( 01-677 5655; Pearse St; 9.30am-6pm Mon-Sat, 9.30am-8pm Thu; all city centre) Housed in a 19th-
century warehouse that was Dublin's first iron-structured building, this design centre has
studios for local craftspeople. They produce jewellery in both contemporary and Celtic-in-
spired designs, and work with Irish pewter, ceramics, silk and other fabrics. Besides jew-
ellery they produce pottery, rugs, wall hangings, cards, leather bags and various other hand-
crafted items. It's immediately opposite the Waterways Visitors Centre, off Lower Grand
Canal St.
