The Royal Hospital Kilmainham was built between 1680 and 1684 as a retirement home
for veteran soldiers, a function it fulfilled until 1928, after which it was left to languish for
half a century before being saved in a 1980s restoration; another refurb in 2012-13 saw the
upgrade of the museum's lighting and fire safety systems.
