at an ATM). The variations in security technology
and the situations were an attempt to generalize
the findings.
The purpose of the study was not to deter-
mine which contexts or device types impacted
the attitudes of the users, but rather to develop
a generalizable model of technology acceptance
for this category of devices. In order to control
for potential situational confounds and biases,
the vignettes were developed to include all of the
application areas discussed above. In addition,
we selected a sample of devices to represent both
the behavioral and physiological categories. All
vignettes were presented to each study participant
to be able to generalize the findings of the research
over all usage categories and device types. The
subjects were asked the same questions after
reading each of the vignettes (see Appendix A)
and all vignettes were presented to each survey
