INTERNET ACCESS
Internet access in the Turks is getting easier all the time. Wireless internet is offered free of
charge in nearly all hotels and many restaurants and bars, while internet cafes and in-house
terminals are getting rarer. It's a good idea to bring a smart phone or laptop with you to
guarantee ease of access.
MAPS
Tourist maps of Provo and Grand Turk are easily acquired from the tourist offices, the ar-
rivals hall in the airport and at most hotels. The tourist offices have some substandard maps
of the less populated islands, but finding one with any sort of detail is a challenge.
MEDICAL SERVICES
There are small hospitals on Provo and on Grand Turk. There are clinics on the smaller is-
lands and a recompression chamber in Providenciales.
MONEY
The Turks and Caicos are unique as a British-dependent territory with the US dollar as its
official currency. The treasury also issues Turks and Caicos crowns and quarters. There are
no currency restrictions on the amount of money that visitors can bring in.
The country is pricey, with a hefty 30% duty slapped on all imports. When you consider
how much is imported to this tiny and barren group of islands, the high price of food sud-
denly makes sense. Credit cards are readily accepted on Provo and Grand Turk, as are trav-
elers checks. Elsewhere, you may need to operate on a cash-only basis. Foreign currency
can be changed at banks in Provo and Grand Turk, which can also issue credit-card ad-
vances and have ATMs. Major credit cards are widely accepted in the Caicos and Grand
