JOJO: A NATIONAL TREASURE
Since the mid '80s a 7ft bottle-nosed male dolphin called JoJo has cruised the
waters off of Provo and North Caicos. When he first appeared, he was shy and
limited his human contact to following or playing in the bow waves of boats. He
soon turned gregarious and has become an active participant whenever people
are in the water.
JoJo is now so popular that he has been named a national treasure by the Min-
istry of Natural Resources. This treasure is protected through the JoJo Dolphins
Project ( 941-5617; www.deanandjojo.com ; PO Box 153, Providenciales,
Turks and Caicos) . In addition to looking out for JoJo, it educates and raises
awareness of issues affecting the ocean.
