GRAND BAHAMA CONCHMAN TRIATHLON
As hurricane season ends, the weather turns nippy at night. Hundreds of competitors des-
cend on Grand Bahama to swim, bike and run until they fall face forward into the sand
( Click here ) . Join them, or just buy them a beer at the Port Lucaya Marketplace afterward.
BAHAMAS WAHOO CHALLENGE
Grizzled deep-sea fishermen and -women come to Bimini to show off their wahoo-
wrangling chops ( Click here ). The Bimini Big Game Club plays host, though all the hotels
on the island tend to book up.
December
High season gets rolling mid-month, as Americans and Europeans begin their winter
holidays. Christmas is big on the islands, with most resorts staging big celebrations.
And then, of course, there's Junkanoo, the island's biggest fete.
CHRISTMAS
The weeks leading up to Christmas bring holiday boat parades, caroling concerts and craft
fairs to many islands. Christmas itself is traditionally celebrated with baked ham, peas 'n'
rice, black cake (a type of fruit cake) and plenty of spicy rum and eggnog.
JUNKANOO
The national street party of the year starts in the early hours of Boxing Day across the is-
lands. Comparable to New Orlean's Mardi Gras or Brazil's Carnival, Junkanoo is a swirl
of parades, street concerts, masked dancers and more. A don't-miss.
