In-Depth Information
On the southwest coast, Fernandez Bay and Long Bay are lined by beautiful Sugar Loaf
Beach while the peninsula's leeward shore is fringed by beautiful Grotto Beach and sev-
eral caves.
Founded by a Loyalist settler, and named for the pirate, Watling's Castle ruins sit atop
a hill with good sea views.
There's a grocery store and in Sugar Loaf, half a mile south of Guanahani Landfall Park
the Stansheka Bar (Queen's Hwy) .
Rum Cay
This 10-mile-long isle is lined by stunning beaches and the entire isle is fringed with coral.
The HMS Conqueror (1861), a 101-gun British man o' war, sank in 30ft of water off Sig-
nal Point.
The only settlement is Port Nelson. The rest of the isle is a virtual wilderness of rolling
hills browsed by feral cattle and donkeys, but it's popular with yachties and true adventur-
ers.
The 18-slip Sumner Point Marina ( 242-331-2823; www.rumcaymarina.com ) also
has attractive one-bedroom cottages (r $125; ) for rent right on the beach from where
you can watch the dreamy sunsets. The marina also has a charming restaurant, Out of the
Blue ( 242-331-2823, mains $10-18) where you can enjoy simple lunches or bigger
meals (reserve by 3pm). Diving and surfing can also be arranged.
See Click here for details of mail-boat stops at the cay.
