NEW BIGHT AREA
New Bight originated as a free-slave settlement named Freetown. Much of the surrounding
land has belonged to the local Armbrister family since 1780. It extends north to the tiny
settlement of Smith Bay, where there's a
bat cave
amid the bush. A goat track leads from
Smith Bay to
Pine Bay
, a good surf beach. Adventurous spirits can hike to
Turtle Cove
,
a splendid spot on the Atlantic shore where marine turtles sometimes hang out. There are
several beautiful casuarina-lined beaches, including
Fernandez Bay
