Whalers or Sunfish sailboats, take along the free scuba gear and go and visit gorgeous Ma-
jor Cay. The restaurant here attracts a big crowd of yachties and can be packed in season -
book ahead.
Club Thunderball BAHAMIAN $$
( 242-355-2012; mains $10-25; lunch & dinner, closed Mon) This lively place is
atop the bluff overlooking the Thunderball Grotto. It serves Bahamian food and has beach
barbecues on Friday night (book a rib!), plus occasional pig roasts and a Super Bowl party
in January. The club also features a pool table, satellite TV and dancing on weekends.
Great Guana Cay
The largest of the Exuma Cays, 12-mile-long Great Guana Cay, also has the cays' largest
settlement, Black Point (population 253), and has a reputation for not being the friendliest
place (it's generally not used to receiving visitors). Facilities include an airstrip, post office
and a medical clinic. An Emancipation Day Regatta is held here each August.
De Shamons ( 242-355-3009; Black Point; r $100; ) has four rooms with
fridge, over its restaurant. The restaurant specializes in freshly caught fish served in tradi-
tional Bahamian style. Ask about the meals when making reservations.
Lorraine's Café ( 242-355-2201; Black Point; mains $8-15) is recommended for in-
expensive Bahamian fare and freshly baked bread and cookies, though it's best to call in
advance to ensure it will be prepared.
Adderley's Convenience Store (
7:30am-6pm) sells a limited range of groceries.
Little Farmer's Cay
This cay is simply a stone's throw away from the southwest tip of Great Guana. It consists
of a fairly small fishing village and bay. It hosts the annual Farmer's Cay Festival &
Regatta in the first weekend of February as well as the spirited Full Moon Beer Festival
in July.
Farmer's Cay Yacht Club & Marina ( 242-355-4017; r $100; ) has four
smallish rooms with TV. In the same building, a cosy restaurant (mains $10-25; lunch
& dinner) serves everything from fish snacks to full lobsters and has a pleasant position
overlooking the sea. Advanced notice is needed for dinner.
Ocean Cabin Restaurant ( 242-355-4006; www.oceancbn.com ; mains $9-30;
breakfast, lunch & dinner) , a small, friendly bar in the hamlet, serves meals and beers,
and has regular barbecues during the winter season. The owners also run two cozy rental
cottages on Dabba Hill ($100 per night) as well as a private island to rent with a three-bed-
room house ($1200 per week).
