RAGGED ISLAND RANGE
Few visitors ever reach this crescent of a dozen or so isles and a score of small
cays that lie about 25 miles south of Little Exuma. The chain begins with the Ju-
mento Cays, arcs west and south for about 100 miles and ends with the largest
isle, Ragged Island. During the 19th century the chains' flats were used for salt-
crystal farming. Today they are virtually uninhabited and the only settlement,
Duncan Town (population 70) on Ragged Island itself is a small fishing village.
The only way to make it here is to charter your own boat.
Santana's Grill BAHAMIAN $$
( 242-345-4102; Queen's Hwy, Williams Town; mains $10-22; lunch Tue-Sat, din-
ner by arrangement) Pull up a bar stool at one of Exuma's most relaxed and enjoyable eat-
eries. Run by the formidable Denise Rolle, this friendly grill offers the best-value fresh
lobster on Exuma and its many regulars often entertain diners with increasingly tall stories
from the Pirates of the Caribbean shoot, part of which happened at nearby Sandy Point
(ask to see their photo albums). There's also a great beach just a matter of feet from the bar.
La Shanté BAHAMIAN $$
( 242-345-4190; Queen's Hwy, Forbes Hill; mains $10-15; lunch & dinner Mon-
Sat) On a small side road signposted off the Queen's Hwy, this place is known island-wide
for its good lobster salad and the potent cocktails served up by its friendly owner, Dwight.
There's a beautiful mini crescent beach right in front of the restaurant, which all-comers
are welcome to use.
