EATING & DRINKING
There are a few bars up this way that serve food.
Café Alesha MODERN BAHAMIAN $$
( 242-336-2203; Queen's Hwy, Old Hooper's Bay; mains $14-25; lunch & dinner
Mon-Fri, dinner Sat & Sun) This highly regarded newcomer has quickly sealed its local
reputation with innovative takes on Bahamian cooking. Run by two sisters who are clearly
ambitious to raise the bar of local cuisine, the restaurant is a spacious and relatively formal
affair. The small menu includes novelspins on old favorites, such as mushroom-glazed pork
chops with sweet potato or more standard grilled lobster tail and conch fritters.
Big D's Conch Spot SEAFOOD $$
(Queen's Hwy, Steventon; mains $10-26; lunch & dinner Tue-Sat) While it's tagline
'world-famous' might be pushing it a little bit, this brightly painted beachside restaurant
exudes charm and retains fans across the island. The conch salad here is fantastic, though
burgers, cracked lobster and whole snapper also feature on the menu. There's a great little
beach here, too, so you can even take a cooling dip while waiting for your food.
Exuma Point Restaurant BAHAMIAN $$
( 242-345-6244; Exuma Point, Rolleville; mains $12-15; lunch Sat & Sun, dinners
by request) Well signposted out of Rolleville, this superbly located open-air restaurant right
on a beautiful stretch of beach makes for a great weekend lunch spot. Enjoy the excellent
Sunday buffer ($17) or a plate of ribs or cracked conch while taking in the sublime view.
Fish & Fry FAST FOOD $
(Queen's Hwy, btwn George Town & Hooper's Bay; mains $8-12; dinner) Definitely a
local experience, this slice of island life may be a bit raucous for some, but it's one of the
best opportunities you'll find on the island to mix with locals. Informal beach huts serve
the day's catch to a beered up and almost exclusively male crowd, but the food is cheap
and the atmosphere largely friendly.
