In-Depth Information
( 242-332-1830; www.uniquevillage.com ; North Palmetto Point; r $90-110; )
The white stucco buildings of this small resort complex have a Spanish Colonial feel, while
the generic tiled guestrooms could belong to any chain motel in the universe. There's a cas-
ual restaurant, a nice pool and the beach just a few feet away.
Atlantic Suites Motel MOTEL $
( 242-332-1882; North Palmetto Point; r $85; ) Right across from Unique Village,
this spick-and-span little motel has rooms with kitchenettes and floral bedspreads. One of
Eleuthera's few bargain digs.
EATING
On Friday evenings, the harbor-side town Fish Fry is the place to be, with oil drum cookers
turning out fried turbot and conch fritters late into the night as locals dance.
Tippy's Bar & Beach Restaurant INTERNATIONAL $$
( 242-332-3331; Banks Rd, North Palmetto Point Beach; mains $18-30; lunch &
dinner) Almost too cool for its own good, this upscale beach shack is the current darling
of visiting celebs, the New York Times and a host of fawning travel mags. Tippy's special-
izes in globally influenced seafood dishes - think lobster wraps, shrimp pizzas and hog
fish with Thai curry. Jam-packed even in low season, it gets totally wild on busy weekend
nights when the piano music starts up and those investment banker types at the next table
start downing tequila shots.
Beach House TAPAS $$
( 242-332-3387; Banks Rd, just south of Governor's Harbour; tapas $8-14; mains
$20-28; lunch & dinner) The well-heeled expat clientele at this intimate tapas lounge all
seem to know each other, but you'll be welcomed, too. Nosh on international tapas - spicy
shrimp, Spanish chorizo, Indian-style chickpeas - on the patio. Or sit inside the warmly lit
dining room, in a converted private home with yellow walls and poured concrete floors.
The outdoor bar, with its incongruous hanging disco ball, is a fine spot for a glass of red.
Mate & Jenny's PIZZA $
( South Palmetto Point; pizzas $10-28; lunch & dinner) Conch pizza and Goombay
Smashes are the order of the day at this popular pizzeria, which also offers fried fish and a
handful of sandwiches. Sports bar ambiance with multiple TVs and decked with American
football memorabilia.
