In-Depth Information
Aqua Pazza ITALIAN $$$
( 242-333-3240; Harbour Island Marina, Dunmore Town; mains $30-35; lunch &
dinner) On a grassy estate overlooking the harbor, this bright yellow open-air restaurant is
the place to go for aperitifs (try the Veneziano - Aperol, Prosecco, club soda) and fancy
pasta dishes.
SPANISH WELLS
A mile offshore from Jean's Bay, the insular island community of Spanish
Wells hasn't changed much since the days of the Eleutheran Adventurers. The
deeply religious, largely white population keeps to itself - so don't expect a su-
perwarm welcome as an outsider. There's not much to see here, other than a tidy
little village of 200-year-old houses and a pretty beach on the north shore. Still,
it's neat to experience the lost-in-time feel of such a closed community.
To visit as a day trip, hop the government ferry from the dock at Gene's Bay
($5 per person if sharing or $10 for a ride as a sole passenger for the five-minute
journey).
Avery's BAHAMIAN $
(Colebrook St, Dunmore Town; mains $6-15; breakfast, lunch & dinner Thu-Tue) Sit
at a plastic table on a porch strung with Christmas lights and tuck into plates of authentic
Bahamian cuisine like pig feet souse, boil fish and grilled grouper with peppers.
For groceries, try Dunmore Deli (King St, Dunmore Town) for fancy imported cheeses,
organic greens from Nassau's Goodfellow Farms and deli sandwiches, Patricia's Fruits
& Vegetables Food Store (Pitt St, Dunmore Town) for homemade jams and candies, and
Sawyer's Food Store (Dunmore St, Dunmore Town) for basics.
ENTERTAINMENT
Top spots for elegant cocktails include the poolside bar at the Rock House and the seaside
Blue Bar at Pink Sands.
Vic Hum Club NIGHTCLUB
(cnr Barrack & Munnings Sts, Dunmore Town; 11am-late) This funky and sometimes
fiery locale has a fine collection of rums, a checkerboard court that doubles as a dance
floor, busy pool table and live reggae music by performers like Maxi Priest or the bar's own
Paddy 'Big Bird' Lewis. Most importantly the world's largest coconut sits behind the bar.
