from which a rum-making tradition evolved, today most adults are employed at the hotels
or in fishing.
on the opposite side of the island, the famed
Pink Sands Beach
is a miles-long stretch of
powdery sand colored rosy by finely crushed coral. It's been called the world's most beau-
tiful beach by a slew of international glossies, and we won't argue.
Briland's laid-back glamour has attracted an international mix of celebrities - if you spot
Mick Jagger or Diane Von Furstenberg wandering around, just say 'good afternoon' and

SIGHTS & ACTIVITIES
One of the finest examples of loyalist architecture is the
Loyalist Cottage
(1797) on Bay
St in Dunmore Town. The 1843
Wesley Methodist Church
(cnr Dunmore & Chapel Sts,
Dunmore Town) , with beautiful hardwood pews and a huge model sailing ship that honors
the seafaring tradition of the Brilanders, is close to the 1768
St John's Anglican Church
(Dunmore St, Dunmore Town) . St John's, near Church St, is claimed to be the oldest
church in the Bahamas.
Also worth a visit are the ancient graves at the
cemetery
on Chapel St. Bahamians give
it a wide berth at night, being fearful of spirits. The handsome 1913
Commissioner's Res-
idence
sits on Goal Lane at Colebrook St.
There's a bizarre collection of
international license plates
and
driftwood signs
(
painted with humorous limericks and aphorisms on Dunmore St, opposite the Royal Palm
Hotel.
Cannons can be seen at the southern end of Bay St. Named
Roundheads
, this now over-
grown 17th-century battery was built by the English to defend the island.
Next to the Harbour Island Club & Marina stand the ruins of the
Haunted House
, sup-
posedly abandoned in the middle of the night by an ill-fated family and later gutted by fire.
Now a mere skeleton, it's photogenically creepy.
No exaggeration, the wide and stunning length of
Pink Sands Beach

really pink; a faint blush by day, turning a rosy red when fired by the dawn or sunset. The
sea is great for swimming and snorkeling, while nearby hotels have public bars and restaur-
ants. It's perfect for self-indulgent beach bumming.
