History
The name 'Eleuthera' comes from the Greek word
eleutheros,
meaning freedom (the Lu-
cayans who originally settled the island called their home 'Cigatoo'). In 1648, English
refugees fleeing religious persecution in Bermuda during the English Civil War era landed
